I have a pot with various cactus and succulents...?

They usually sit in my living room that has a large window facing north. Since it has been so drab and wintery outside I moved them in front of a south facing window to get some sun. Now most of them have shriveled or turned a brown tint. Was it too much sun? Will they be better off in the room facin north, with indirect sun, but a bright room? Thanks
